    1. I thought that video was hilarious! Even though it was in another language, the humor was slapstick and the language barrier didn’t even matter. At first, I was a little confused as to how the video would be entertaining because of the boys speaking in German, but then I realized there was more to it than just a ‘talk show’ type video and got excited to see what was ahead. The tablecloth pull was a pretty cool trick in of itself, and even if that were the whole video I would have enjoyed it. However, obviously the thing that was funny to me was the falling of the bookcase on the kid and the other one sprinting away. Anything unintentional like that, that the viewer doesn’t expect is going to happen, always makes a video more entertaining to watch, and as horrible of a person as I might be for saying this, watching others getting hurt is always funny to me (I constantly google videos of people falling…oops), as long as they are ok after! Having said that, I am surprised that the wall unit didn’t hurt the child, as I am assuming no dramatic injury occurred if the video was still uploaded. Overall, a really fun and short video!

    2. I think it's funny that this video was posted after we discussed "Schadenfraude" on Wednesday with Josh. (I think it was mentioned in regards to Mike posting a ridiculously long clip that now seems to be removed…) This German clip reminds me of America's Funniest Home Videos in the way it bases its humor on other people's misfortune. The show shows a lot of home videos of kids and parents hurting each other accidentally and then laughing at their painful circumstances. This always made me consider what was acceptable to laugh at in society and especially on television. For example, crotch shots are a big theme in America’s Funniest Home Videos, and that seems to be the case in our culture as well. Whereas if someone gets seriously injured, most likely it wouldn’t be acceptable to laugh at that. However, this video looks really dangerous for the smaller child who is trapped under the shelf unit and has a television fall on him (ironic). So I find it interesting that we can still laugh at this video, along with the other 20.7 million viewers, even though it well may be that that child went to the hospital. Sorry for the cynicism… :/

    1. This was an interesting portrayal of the suburban housewife, made hilarious with some modernist elements. First of all by having suburban housewife, Gayle, played by a man (who changes his voice to have a ditsy inflection but still sound masculine) creates displeasing caricature that functions in making Gayle a figure that is to be mocked. Another modernist element is the textual fragmentation and frenetic nature of the narrative and I’m assuming, series as a whole. In this first episode of the web series, Gayle introduces us to her children who she almost immediately shoos away, socializes with two other suburban woman, goes jogging on two separate occasions, flirts with a neighbor, and accidently throws a knife at her husband. The webisode ends with her attempting to run away after stabbing her husband in a kayak, so we’re left without a resolution unless we watch the next episode.
I can see how people would enjoy the unpredictability and outrageousness of this web series. An episode may be consumed quickly because of its short length and created rather inexpensively because of its genre and still result in a satisfying form of entertainment.

    2. This video is pretty funny! I generally watch videos like this, but I found it hilarious! There were a couple of surprises that were pretty funny, such as the one surprise of when Gayle first starts talking. In the beginning you would definitely expect her to be a woman by the weights, clothes and long hair. This totally changes the social norm when she says her fist words and you realize that the Gayle is actually a man… or a woman with a deep voice. People always seem to think that it’s funny when a man switches gender roles and plays as a woman, as well as when extreme and unsuspected things happen. Not only is Gayle unexpectedly a woman, but she is so extreme at everything she says! For example, she yells at the one woman at her book club meeting for making a comment, when she kicks Terri out because she isn’t valedictorian, and even in the very beginning when she is exclaiming how perfect her dog even is. Though all of this is so great, my favorite part I at the end when she is talking about her new cheese knives and unlike normal people and testing them out by cutting the cheese, she is actually throwing them an d stabs her husband.

    1. Overly aggressive caroling from Amy Poehler and Billy Eichner and they get angry when you sing the lyrics wrong, phenomenal. Especially the ending of "Someone wants a goddamn Partridge, I know it." I noticed that Eichner is getting his own show on Fuse sponsored by Funny or Die, which has a chance to succeed in this era of internet video driven content. I find it interesting that as many programs utilize this man on the street idea blended with the unsuspecting public, it often creates hilarious results. This has been shown on shows like The Daily Show and The Tonight Show because we have seen over and over again, almost nothing is funnier than the unexpected reactions of Americans on the street. As a fan of Amy Poehler from Parks and Rec, I was surprised that someone was unable to know her, but as someone who watches a lot of television, I also often fail to realize that not everyone watches as much TV as me. This idea has also transitioned well into films like Borat and Bad Grandpa which used the idea of the main character being in on the joke but no one else understanding what was going on. This is something that seems to have become more prevalent in this era of convergence TV, as I cant remember seeing it prior to the turn of the century.

    2. This video has been all over Facebook and other social media sites during the past week or so, and it’s hilarious every time I watch it (yes, I’ve watched it multiple times)! I especially like that Billy Eichner has guest starred on a few episodes of Amy Poehler’s show Parks and Recreation as Craig, whose character is really similar to Billy (at least, the way Billy acts on his own show). It’s cool to see actors from a TV show that I love doing something like this. Web videos always make me feel more connected to the actors—they seem more accessible when they’re running around New York City and then posting a video about it for anyone to see.

I also agree with Jay, who commented before me, that it’s interesting that Billy On the Street is on Funny Or Die and is transitioning to Fuse. Funny Or Die has been really significant in the emergence of web videos and has expanded a lot since it began. And by moving Billy On the Street to Fuse, television and web content are really merging. It makes me wonder if television shows in the future will adopt more of a webisode, segmented format like this.

  8. Every time Paul Rudd appears on Conan and is asked to show a clip of whatever movie he's promoting, he always shows the same clip and it's never for his movie. Pretty funny, check it out if you're a Paul Rudd fan :)

    1. I just saw this last night and was laughing the whole time. Paul Rudd is the greatest ever and I love this prank so much. He's so nonchalant about it and it makes me so happy! I love when he says that he didn't do it before Knocked Up cause Judd Apatow told him not to, and then after he's like, EH, screw you Judd, I'm still doing it before This is 40 and Anchorman 2. Also, turns out the entire movie is on YouTube, and for some reason I have watched almost 10 minutes of it now. After the kid falls in the water, he gets right back up, and his only response to his concerned family is "did you see it?! The little creature?!" as if he didn't just fall into a lake from a large cliff. And why is he peering out at the lake when he's in a freakin wheelchair? And right now in the movie, they just sucked up the little alien man in a vacuum, with the vacuum bag on the girl's back (is she a ghost buster?) and the girl was just dragged around the house, hitting walls like she was possessed, but now she's fine. Whatever, the point it, Paul Rudd is a beautiful silly soul and nobody compares. He is witty and charming and if I don't marry a man just like him, I'm going to consider my life a failure.

    2. As Conan and Paul Rudd mention on the clip, the clip is from is Mac and Me, a terrible, terrible film. Its sole reason for existence was to capitalize on the success of E.T. and to sell as much products as it could. The plot was extremely similar to E.T. (alien gets lost on Earth, has to find its way back home with the help of its new human friends), featuring an alien named Mac, who must literally drink Coca-Cola and eat Skittles to survive. The protagonist’s mother worked at a Sears, whose logo was prominently displayed throughout the film. Although that wheelchair scene that Paul Rudd liked to show on Conan’s talk show was its most “memorable” scene, the other infamous scene in the movie was the McDonalds scene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdvO0tmNjGo), which was essentially a five-minute dance sequence-slash-infomercial with a cameo from Ronald McDonald itself. Surprisingly, rumor has it that there was no quid pro quo between the filmmakers and the companies whose products were in the film.

The YouTube compilation itself was great, and it’s funny how Paul Rudd, a guest, was able to create a reoccurring gag on Conan’s talk show.

    1. Bo Burham serves as a great example of the new generation of comedians who have risen to fame by taking advantage of video sites such as YouTube, apps such as Vine, or social networking sites such as Twitter. Bo uploads short, humorous videos to Vine nearly every day, and promotions for his books, CDs, and DVDs. Bo’s ironic self-reflexivity, seen in lines such as “so people think you’re funny, how do we get your money?” reminds me of George Burns and Gracie Allens. He purposely draws attention to the commercialism involved in his entertainment. Bo, who uploaded this video himself as a promotion for his CD, even uses the YouTube tools to insert this self-reflexivity into the video. The end of this video contains a brief mention of Bo’s CD. Underneath he left the comment “ironic plug…*facepalm*,” which makes fun of not only the video’s commercial purpose, but also Bo’s self-reflexive treatment of his commercial purpose. Whoa. Then he also uses the YouTube tools to leave a promotional link to another one of his YouTube videos. However, in a manner similar to Burns and Allen who remind their audience that the corporate sponsor allows the audience to enjoy their show, Bo reminds his audience that they make his personal indulgences possible through the attention and patronage that they give him.

    2. I really really like this clip! I've been a fan of Bo's comedy for awhile, but this is one of his more darkly satirical songs, probably because it directly involves himself and the industry he's in. Ironically, I saw this after going though the entire section in my study notes on postmodernism, so it's funny to me that this song is so self-reflexive about the entertainment and media industry. The line where he says "my drug's attention, I am an addict
but I get paid to indulge in my habit" is very telling, especially in the current state of the music industry. There's a lot of controversy over stars like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus calling themselves 'artists,' while truly just making spectacles of themselves 90% of the time, yet I wonder if the whole reason they behave this way is because we've shown them that you're only rewarded by the public if you're attention-grabbing and different? In this sense, I think the speed of the Internet, information, and the media has made it ever more apparent for celebrities to be the most talked about of the day, which means they need to perform a new stunt every day to get on top.

For those who like parodies, black divas and shade throwing.

    In Response to Jay Sarkar:

I love A Christmas Story, and even though I’m older now I still get tense when I see this seen as my father would have had a heart attack and I would likely be dead. This clip is entertaining as it takes from the Post Modernist rules by using old material and reimagining the outcome. If you have seen A Christmas story you are already invested and if you haven’t its still funny as a stand alone, because who doesn’t like when you stick it to your old man. I think what I like most about this, is the commitment to wardrobe and accessories. The glasses, coat, earmuffs and even the actor himself were exactly on point with the movie itself. Also, if you know the father, although loveable was a foul mouthed conesuier and the actual scene from the movie where you feel exactly like Ralphy, begging that he just comes out and says I got it from you dad, was a huge pay off in this short comedy video. All in all I would deem this video a 4/5…I would have liked the scene to have included the mom and brother, who are scene in the original, but that’s just me nitpicking.

    2. "Bells jingle, Mariah makes singles." From that line, about 10 seconds in, I was already cackling! I am pretty sure I have seen one of these videos before and they are prime! I think it is so great that YouTube gives the average user the opportunity to express their creative talents online and gain recognition for them. Also, as we briefly mentioned in class, allowing users to piece together clips from various sources to create a parody of their own has made for a different kind of webisode online. As opposed to Funny or Die videos, it is apparent that the videos gain so much popularity that users can continue to make videos as if they were creating a show themselves--this show managed to make it to their second season.

With regard to the actual content, I think the idea is genius! Going through so many videos of all of the black divas and creating videos that feeds off of their supposed "beefs" behind closed doors is so entertaining to watch--we finally get to catch a glimpse of what catty exchange may occur between Mariah Carey and Rihanna. The addition of Christina Aguilera completely caught me off guard, and now I think I will go back and watch all of the videos after this exam.

    1. I knew this video was going to be worth watching once I saw the “Knowles 81” t-shirt. I absolutely adore this video and admire the choreography despite how envious I am that he has the ability to do moves that I could not recreate in my wildest dreams. It’s crazy to think that this kid became an overnight sensation with this viral video when there are probably hundreds just like it. It just really goes to show the notion of “nobody knows” in new media platforms like YouTube.

Although all the clips were original, chrislarious cut and pieced together different parts of his dance together, probably due to the fact that it took him more than one try to complete the routine to his liking if that, to construct the final product to share with the rest of the world wide web. Just as a side note, I really appreciate all the positive comments that I’ve seen on this video as most YouTube videos are plagued with negative and offensive comments often times trying to start arguments or get a rise out of the poster, well done YouTubers, well done. And finally, sine Loren brought it up…all hail Queen Bey and the perfection that is “Beyonce”.

  12. Since my sister has a Boston Terrier, we spend a lot of time trading videos back and forth of pet owners around the world dealing with their misbehaving Bostons. Here's one that I love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq5lZG8mENM

    1. I think this clip is significant because about ten years ago, none of us would have understood why we would enjoy watching home videos of other people's pets. But because of the rise of YouTube, the internet, and other social media platforms in which creating and sharing video content is so easy, our tastes have changed. Many people would rather watch shorter clips, and due to globalization, can do so from almost anywhere in the world.

The rise of pet videos is also something that is specific to short video content. I think 99% of us would never watch a video about an animal that is normal length (I guess there are animated pet movies)…but for the most part, I don't think there is a correlation between those that liked Air-bud and those that like pet videos. Rather, it's because we enjoy short bursts of comedy, and because it is so short, we are willing to expand our horizons and broaden our tastes to watch almost anything people say is funny because, A. we can stop watching at any time, and B. it doesn't take up too much of our time. That's the beauty of YouTube.
